"When You Want it done right...
Swimming pool water chemistry doesn't have to be difficult, or really expensive, but it does need to be properly maintained. There are many times when trying to save money can cost a lot of money. We don't sell chemicals, but we want you to get the most for your money. We are working on this page to help you do just that. While we are working on it, here's a page at another of our sites that has some helpful information:
NEW! Try our redesigned pages at PoolSpaOKC.com for quick navigation to all of our topics!
Honestly, the average homeowner doesn't need to know all there is to know about water chemistry.... The basics will do! Most pool stores will test your water, usually for free, assuming that you will purchase your chemicals from them. Fair enough, but you need to know enough to be able to buy what you need, not always what they want to sell you!
The first place to start is with a test kit. I like the strips, because they are fast, easy to read, and accurate. When you buy your first kit, get the good one with the book. It does more tests than you need every day, but it is the book that helps you to understand the results, and what you need to do to keep your chemicals in balance.
There is just no way around it. If your pool is green, it means that it is not sanitized. Algae will not grow in properly sanitized water. Some people like to use algaecides, and pool stores like to sell it. But most algaecides are preventative, not for killing. there are lots of products out there to enhance the effectiveness of sanitizers, but I seldom use any of them! I chlorinate the daylights out of my pool at the beginning of the season, and never let it get low again. I also make sure to keep the other chemicals in balance - Ph, Alkalinity, and Hardness.
There are a couple of reasons why the pool might make your eyes burn. If the Ph is low or high, it can be irritating, but usually it is a lack of chlorine. Huh?, you say..... Let me clarify! When you go to a public pool in the middle of the afternoon, and the smell of chlorine burns your nose, what you are smelling is the dead chlorine, or combined chlorine in the water. this is chlorine that has done it's job, and is now "dead in the water". You get rid of them through super chlorination, also known as shocking the pool. This burns off all the "dead" chlorine, leaving only free, available chlorine in the water. At normal levels, chlorine actually has a rather fresh, almost sweet smell.
There are lots of chlorine alternatives, both chemically and mechanically. Salt Systems, Ionizer, and Ozone systems come and go in popularity, there are silver and copper systems, bromine, biguinide, and even iodine. So far as I have found, chlorine is still the most cost effective in the long run.
